One of the first few questions I hear from new wig wearers is "How often should I wash my wig?" As a wig wearing expert, I can tell you that taking care of your wig is much easier than it sounds.

How Often should I wash my wig?

However, there are a few general guidelines that will help you determine when it’s time to wash your wig. So, whether you wear a wig for fashion, convenience, or medical hair-loss you want your hair to look fresh and natural. Let me explain more on each of those factors and a few tips on how you can extend the life-span of your synthetic hair wigs along with human hair wigs as well.

General Guidelines

While the specific washing frequency may vary depending on the factors mentioned above, here are some general guidelines to follow:

  • Synthetic wigs: As a general rule, synthetic wigs should be washed every 10-12 wears if worn all day or 6-8 weeks if worn less
  • Human hair wigs: Human hair wigs should be washed every 2-3 weeks or when you notice a significant build-up of styling products.
  • Between washes: In between washes, you can freshen up your wig by using a wig-specific dry shampoo or a wig conditioner spray.
  • Appearance: Personally, if my wig begins to look stiff and hard to run my fingers through then I like to wash. No one wants a helmet head. 😱

Factors to Consider

The frequency of washing your wig depends on several factors:

  1. Type of wigs: Synthetic wigs have different care requirements than human hair wigs.

How to extend the life-span of your wig?

When it's time to wash your wig, follow these steps:

      1. Gently detangle the wig using a wide-tooth comb or wig brush, starting from the ends and working your way up to avoid damaging the hair fibers.
      2. Fill a basin or sink with lukewarm water and add a small amount of wig shampoo. Swish the wig gently in the water for a few minutes, then rinse it thoroughly with clean water.
      3. Apply a wig conditioner or treatment and leave it on for the recommended time. Rinse the wig again to remove any excess product.
      4. Gently pat the wig dry with a towel, avoiding rubbing or wringing it.
      5. Place the wig on a wig stand or a towel to air dry completely before styling.
