Multiple wigs

If you're a first-time wig wearer knowing how many wigs to purchase can be a difficult task.

However, there are a few things to consider, before you begin that will help in determining how many wigs would be best for you.  Assuming you will be wearing your wig daily, I’ve found there are three important factors that contribute greatly in determining the lifespan of your wig.

Top 3 factors that Contribute to the Lifespan of a Wig.

  1. Type of hair Fiber: (Synthetic Vs Human Hair)
  2. Length of Hair
  3. Daily activities

So, let’s look at those three contributing factors below to help you in determining the right number of wigs you should expect to purchase.

Human Hair Vs Synthetic

Human hair wigs are more of an investment compared to synthetic wigs based on their price point. The advantage of course is that human hair wigs if properly washed and cared for correctly can each last a year or more. One obvious benefit to having a second human hair wig is while one is getting washed and style you always have one wig to wear.  I recommend any wig wearer to at least get 2 wigs.

Synthetic wigs are more cost effective, which make it easier if you have a limited budget. With beautiful styles and colors that are ready-to-wear and don’t require any styling.  However, the synthetic fiber even though it may look similar to human hair does not hold up well to heat, friction or harsh pulling of the fiber.  It is not uncommon for someone to purchase 3-4 synthetic wigs in a years’ time.

Long Synthetic Wigs vs Short Synthetic Wigs

If you decide to purchase a synthetic wig then the length you choose may impact how soon you will need to replace your wig.   A Shorter wig is easier to care for, tangles less and doesn’t matte up like a longer wig can. You have lot's of style options in the short to mid-length style.  Take a look at these Top Sellers:

If Long hair is a must but purchasing human hair is not in the budget you do have the option of getting long but may want to consider  heat-friendly synthetic wigs.  When the hair fiber begins to look rough and like you have split ends you can easily apply a low-heat setting and smooth out the fiber.  This will enable you to keep the fiber looking better longer than normal synthetic fiber.  Take a look at this long beauty that is heat-friendly and can be styled and the fiber smoothed out with hot tools at a low-heat setting.

As you can see, there’s not a specific answer to this question on how many wigs you need to purchase.  So much has to do with your lifestyle, the type of fiber you choose and the length of the style.  Ultimately any wig will need to be replaced at some point.  So it's important to plan according to the amount of time that you plan to be wearing a wig.  I would recommend always purchasing at least 2 wigs weather it's synthetic or human.  You can always purchase a third wig later when necessary but on average I would expect wanting to replace a synthetic wig every 3-4 months and a human hair wig at least 1 time a year.
